The Blasphemy Challenge

Thursday, May 10, 2007

Have you heard about this?
There's a group called the 'Rational Response Squad' who have set up a website called the Blasphemy Challenge. Here is what they are saying on their website...
We want your soul.

It's simple. You record a short message damning yourself to Hell, you upload it to YouTube, and then the Rational Response Squad will send you a free The God Who Wasn't There DVD. It's that easy.

INSTRUCTIONS:
You may damn yourself to Hell however you would like, but somewhere in your video you must say this phrase: "I deny the Holy Spirit."

Why? Because, according to Mark 3:29 in the Holy Bible, "Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin." Jesus will forgive you for just about anything, but he won't forgive you for denying the existence of the Holy Spirit. Ever. This is a one-way road you're taking here.

What do you think? How do you feel about this? What's your response?

Well first I think the group has issues

Thoughts are I am interested in seeing the demographic that responds to this in the way that the group wants!!

Now my personal thoughts on this unforgivable sin
Thought about this a lot a while back! And was terrified but came out with this
    thought
So I don’t fully believe that saying the words will damn your self to hell
Just like saying the words Jesus enter my life wont magically save you, word with out intent or understanding of the reason/ meaning are just words,
Cause if just saying words are all God wants to hear and he will then decide one way or another then we as Christians should just run around tricking people to say they want Christ. But I’m pretty sure there’s more to Life and God then just
    Who says what words

I think the real unforgivable sin is to hear and know the message of God Jesus and the Spirit and then claim it to be untrue.
When you think about it it’s very logical, if Jesus is the only way to heaven and then you don’t accept that then you aren’t forgiven!!
It’s the willful act or refusing God!

I could be wrong, been once before I think!
So what every one else say?

This is The Point ----> .

This is where The Blasphemy Challenge is ----> |

They've missed the point, but it's not surprising. The guys who have created this site are clearly pissed off- maybe it's with Christianity, maybe it's with Jesus, maybe they're just pissed-off in general and an attack on God is the manifestation of this pissed-offedness. Or maybe they're trying to bring publicity to the DVD (which I hear I sequel is being made: "The Buddha That Wasn't There").

Regardless, they've certainly made Christianity pretty cut-and-dry: it's the escape from Hell, and nothing more. Essentially, the guys at the BC are saying that the only reason to be a Christian is to avoid burning for eternity. Oh, and we're supposedly telling kids this, which is apparently a form a abuse.

And while this spiritual fire-insurance is a good thing, I think everyone reading this blog would agree there is more to Christianity than a "Get-Out-Of-Hell-Free" Card. It's about knowing the One who created you, living as Christ lived, creating a Kingdom of God, etc. I really doubt that Jesus' sole purpose on earth was to save us from Hell; if it was, why'd He preach to us instead of going straight to the cross?

As for "indoctrinating children," I personally don't think it's right to tell campers that they'll burn in Hell if they don't become Christians- I'm in no mood to scare kids (especially since, well, scare tactics were used to "convert" me.) I'm glad MYW seems to see the same- we're focussed around getting the campers to know God through love, not fear.

In simplifying Christianity, the BC makes it pretty tempting for youth to post themselves "denying" the Holy Spirit. People, especially youth, like to revolt and rebel, and there isn't a greater thing to rebel against than the Creator of the World. But I agree with what Brad said- just because you say it, doesn't make it true.

So I guess what we have to do is pray that we're reaching our campers with a message that is more than "Accept Jesus or go to Hell." And pray for those who are attacking God- I'm sure God is perfectly capable of handling these attacks, but people like Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris are seriously beginning to get on my nerves.
